About Workday

Workday is the enterprise HRIS and financial management platform for large companies that have outgrown BambooHR and need a single system of record across HR, Finance, and Planning. Pricing is entirely custom and enterprise-only — expect $100-$300+/employee/year for a typical deployment, plus implementation costs that routinely reach $500K-$2M+ for large organizations, and ongoing admin overhead requiring dedicated Workday system administrators. The breadth is real: HR, payroll, benefits, recruiting, talent management, financial management, and planning all share a single data model. Reporting and analytics are deep. The main complaint from everyone who has used Workday: the UI is genuinely difficult by modern standards — functional but complex, with a learning curve that requires dedicated admins and extensive training. Implementation projects consistently run over budget and timeline; this is an industry joke, not an outlier. Customization requires certified Workday consultants. Competes with SAP SuccessFactors (comparable complexity, less modern UI), Oracle HCM, and Rippling (far simpler, far cheaper for mid-market). Workday's position in the 1,000+ employee segment is strong but sustained by contract lock-in as much as product excellence.

Best For

Not Ideal For

  • mid-market companies under 500 employees where Rippling or BambooHR are far cheaper and faster
  • teams without budget for a 6-18 month implementation project and ongoing admin overhead
  • organizations that expect a modern, intuitive UI without extensive training

Potential Deal Breakers

Signup Experience

No self-serve access -- enterprise sales process with demo, scoping, and multi-month implementation. Workday deployments typically involve implementation partners and take 6-18 months for large organizations. Not a tool you try before buying.

For Home Users

Not applicable for personal or home use in any scenario.

For Business Users

Pricing typically $100+/user/yr with implementation costs adding significantly to total investment. The gold standard for enterprise HRIS and financial management -- covers payroll, benefits, recruiting, learning, planning, and financials in one system of record. Best suited for companies with 1000+ employees that can justify the implementation investment and ongoing cost. Personio and BambooHR serve SMBs; Workday serves the enterprise segment where data governance, global compliance, and integration depth justify the expense.

Our Verdict

Workday is the enterprise standard because it handles the complexity of large-org HR and Finance in one place, not because it's a joy to use. The implementation cost and ongoing admin burden are real — budget for both before signing. For anything under 500 employees, the ROI math rarely works out and Rippling or BambooHR will serve you better.
