PostHog
FreemiumOpen-source product analytics suite
About PostHog
PostHog is the open-source product analytics platform that combines what Amplitude, Hotjar, and LaunchDarkly do into one self-hostable stack. Free cloud tier: 1M events/month, no credit card required. Session replay, feature flags, A/B testing, heatmaps, surveys, and funnels all in one dashboard. Self-hosted via Docker Compose or Kubernetes — the docs are genuinely good. EU Cloud is available for data residency requirements. Where PostHog wins: if you want Amplitude plus LaunchDarkly plus Hotjar for $0, this is it. The startup community loves the free tier and the fact that data stays in your own infrastructure when self-hosted. Downsides: self-hosted means you own the ops burden — Postgres and ClickHouse both need real hardware at high event volumes. Cloud pricing above the free tier gets expensive fast: $0.00045/event past 1M. The UI has improved significantly since 2022 but still feels slightly less polished than Amplitude in some areas. Feature flags and A/B testing are functional but not as mature as LaunchDarkly. Main competitor to Mixpanel and Amplitude for startups prioritizing data ownership over polished UX.

- teams that need Salesforce or Marketo integrations out of the box
Potential Deal Breakers

- cloud pricing scales fast past 1M events ($0.00045/event)
- feature flag and experimentation maturity behind dedicated tools like LaunchDarkly
Data & Privacy
Open-source product analytics. Self-hosted option keeps all data on your infrastructure. Cloud version offers EU hosting. No AI training on customer data. No data selling. SOC 2 Type 2 certified. Generous open-source license allows full self-hosting.
Who Is This For?
Hands-on tested May 2026
Signup Experience
Email signup with no credit card required. Free cloud tier up to 1M events per month. Onboarding wizard installs the JS snippet and verifies data is flowing. Dashboard surfaces product analytics, session recordings, feature flags, and A/B tests from a single interface -- more to learn than a single-purpose tool but well-documented.
For Home Users
Not designed for personal or home use. Geared toward product teams tracking user behavior in apps. Self-hosting is feasible but requires a server and Docker setup.
For Business Users
Free tier covering 1M events per month is genuinely competitive. Bundles product analytics, session replay, feature flags, A/B testing, and surveys -- replacing several separate tools. Open-source with active development. Better value than Mixpanel when you need the full stack; Mixpanel is more polished if you only need pure analytics.
Our Verdict
PostHog is the best value in product analytics if you have an engineer who can set it up. The free cloud tier covers most startups, and the self-hosted path is actively maintained. The tradeoff is UI polish lags Amplitude, ClickHouse needs real hardware at scale, and the feature flag tooling isn't quite LaunchDarkly-level. Still a remarkable amount of product for $0.
