About Frigate

Frigate is an open-source network video recorder with real-time AI object detection that replaces commercial security camera systems. Using Google Coral TPU or CPU-based detection it identifies people, cars, animals, and other objects in camera feeds, reducing false alerts from motion-only detection. Integration with Home Assistant provides automations based on detected objects like turning on lights when a person is detected or sending alerts when an unknown car enters the driveway. RTSP camera support covers most IP cameras. Recording modes include continuous 24/7 recording, detection-based recording, and snapshot capture. The timeline view shows detected events with thumbnail previews. Multi-camera support handles complex setups with zone-based detection areas. Hardware acceleration via Intel QuickSync or NVIDIA reduces CPU load for video decoding. Built with Python and runs via Docker. Frigate has become the standard NVR in the Home Assistant community replacing expensive commercial systems like Ring or Nest with local AI processing that never sends video to the cloud.

Signup Experience

Docker Compose deployment with camera configuration in YAML. Requires RTSP camera URLs which means knowing your camera IP addresses and stream paths. Google Coral TPU is optional but dramatically improves detection performance. First detection events appear within minutes of configuration. Home Assistant integration requires adding the Frigate integration.

For Home Users

Transforms basic IP cameras into an intelligent security system. The AI detection means you get alerts for people and cars, not every tree branch moving in the wind. Completely replaces Ring or Nest with zero monthly subscription. The savings versus commercial subscriptions pay for the hardware within a year. Setup complexity is moderate — you need to be comfortable with Docker and YAML. The Coral TPU costs about $30 and is highly recommended. Storage needs are significant for 24/7 recording — budget 1TB per camera per month for continuous recording.

For Business Users

Suitable for small business security monitoring. The AI detection quality rivals commercial systems. Integration with Home Assistant enables business automation — lights on when someone enters after hours, alerts for unexpected vehicle access. Not suitable for enterprise security where compliance, audit trails, and professional monitoring services are required. No commercial support or SLA. Best for small offices, retail shops, and warehouses where the owner manages their own security.

Our Verdict

Frigate replaces commercial security camera subscriptions with local AI that is genuinely better at detecting what matters. The Home Assistant integration makes it part of a complete smart home.
