Comparisons

Six months ago we ran a head-to-head of the major AI image generators. This is the refresh: what Midjourney and DALL-E (via ChatGPT) cost today according to our product database, what's changed in how people actually use them, and whether the original verdict still holds. Short version: it mostly does, but the "which one" answer depends more on your workflow than on any quality gap.

One honest caveat up front. AI image models change monthly, so any claim about "best quality" has a short shelf life. We're comparing pricing structure and workflow fit, which age far better than benchmark impressions, and we've kept the quality talk to things that have been consistent for months.

Pricing Right Now

Midjourney has no free tier. The plans in our database:

  • ▸Basic: $10/month. Roughly 200 image generations a month and a general commercial license.
  • ▸Standard: $30/month. 15 hours of fast GPU time, unlimited relaxed-mode generations, and stealth mode.
  • ▸Pro: $60/month. 30 hours of fast GPU time, stealth mode, and 12 concurrent jobs.

Midjourney also offers a higher tier above Pro for heavy users, and annual billing is discounted, so check the live pricing page before committing to a year. The practical point: the $10 plan is enough for casual use, but the moment you iterate a lot (and everyone does), you'll burn 200 generations fast and end up on Standard.

DALL-E is OpenAI's image model, and you reach it two ways:

  • ▸ChatGPT Free: $0. Basic image generation with limited daily use.
  • ▸ChatGPT Plus: $20/month. Much higher image generation limits, alongside everything else in Plus (chat models, data analysis, voice, custom GPTs).
  • ▸ChatGPT Business: $25/user/month (billed monthly; the annual rate is lower, around $20/user). Higher limits, admin controls, data excluded from training by default, two-seat minimum.
  • ▸API: $0.04 to $0.08 per image for DALL-E 3, depending on resolution and quality.

The pricing logic is different, and that's the real story. Midjourney is a dedicated image subscription. DALL-E is a feature of a general-purpose AI subscription. If you already pay $20 for ChatGPT Plus, images are effectively free on top of that. If you only want images, Midjourney Basic at $10 is the cheaper entry point.

What Each One Is Actually Good At

Midjourney: the look

Midjourney's strength has been consistent since we first covered it: the default output looks designed. Lighting, composition, and texture come out polished even from a lazy prompt. For concept art, mood boards, album-cover-style imagery, and marketing hero shots, it usually needs the fewest attempts to produce something you'd actually show a client.

Pros:

  • ▸Best out-of-the-box aesthetics of the mainstream options
  • ▸Style and character reference tools help keep a consistent look across a set
  • ▸Web interface now exists, so Discord is no longer mandatory
  • ▸Commercial license included on paid plans

Cons:

  • ▸No free tier at all, so you can't properly test before paying
  • ▸Weaker at following precise, literal instructions (exact object counts, specific layouts)
  • ▸Text rendered inside images is better than it was but still hit-or-miss
  • ▸Fast-hour accounting on Standard and Pro takes a minute to understand, and heavy days can drain it

DALL-E via ChatGPT: the conversation

The advantage of DALL-E is not that each image is prettier. It's that you can talk to it. You ask for an image, say "make the background darker and move the logo left", and it adjusts. ChatGPT also rewrites your prompt behind the scenes, which makes it forgiving for people who don't know prompt tricks. It's also the stronger choice when an image needs legible text, like a poster, a labeled diagram, or a UI mockup.

Pros:

  • ▸Easiest to use by far; no special syntax or separate app
  • ▸Follows literal instructions more reliably
  • ▸A real free tier, and zero extra cost if you already pay for ChatGPT Plus
  • ▸API access for building image generation into your own product at a predictable per-image price

Cons:

  • ▸Output tends to look cleaner and more generic than Midjourney's
  • ▸Content filters can be aggressive and occasionally block harmless requests
  • ▸Limited fine control compared with open tools like Stable Diffusion
  • ▸Free-tier limits are small and can change without much notice

What About the Others?

These two aren't the whole field. Stable Diffusion remains the only serious option if you want to run everything locally for free, fine-tune on your own images, or avoid content restrictions. It's free to self-host, the Stability API runs about $0.01 to $0.05 per image, and the trade-off is real setup work and a decent GPU (SDXL wants 8GB of VRAM, newer models like Flux want 12GB or more). It has also been overtaken on raw photorealism by newer models, so you're choosing it for control, not for out-of-the-box beauty.

Adobe Firefly and Leonardo AI both cover narrower needs: Firefly for teams that care about the commercial-safety story and live inside Creative Cloud, Leonardo for game-asset pipelines. We didn't re-verify their pricing for this refresh, so the figures in the original comparison should be treated as a starting point and checked against their pricing pages.

What Changed Since the Original

  • ▸Pricing structure held steady. Midjourney's Basic, Standard, and Pro tiers are the same shape, and ChatGPT Plus is still $20.
  • ▸The Discord barrier faded. The web app means "you have to use Discord" is no longer a fair knock on Midjourney.
  • ▸The gap narrowed on instruction-following. Both tools got better at things that used to break them, such as hands and in-image text, so those are less of a deciding factor than they were in the spring.
  • ▸The real decision moved from quality to workflow. If you generate a handful of images a week as part of other work, a chat tool wins on convenience. If images are the work, a dedicated tool wins on output.

Who Should Pick What

Pay for Midjourney if you're a designer, illustrator, or marketer producing visual assets regularly and care about aesthetic polish. Start on Basic, but plan to move to Standard if you iterate heavily. Budget $30/month as the realistic number.

Use DALL-E through ChatGPT if you already subscribe to ChatGPT Plus, need occasional images alongside writing and analysis, or need images with accurate text. Try the free tier first; it costs nothing and tells you whether it's enough.

Use the API if you're a developer adding image generation to a product. DALL-E's per-image pricing is predictable, and Midjourney isn't built for that.

Skip both and look at Stable Diffusion if you need unlimited local generation, custom-trained styles, or full control, and you're comfortable with technical setup.

Which Should You Choose?

If you want one recommendation: start with DALL-E's free tier through ChatGPT, because it costs nothing and you'll learn what you actually need. If you hit its limits or the output feels too plain, add Midjourney Basic at $10/month for the work where looks matter. You don't need to commit to one forever. Plenty of people keep Plus for everyday use and add Midjourney only in months when they have visual projects.

The original verdict stands: Midjourney for beauty, DALL-E for convenience and accuracy, Stable Diffusion for control. What's different is how much weight each reason carries. Pick based on how often you generate images and whether you need a polished look or a quick, accurate one.
