About Proton Pass

Proton Pass is the password manager from Proton, the Swiss privacy company behind ProtonMail and ProtonVPN. The privacy and security angle is the differentiator: Proton is incorporated in Switzerland under strong privacy laws, uses end-to-end encryption across all stored data, and the company's business model is subscriptions rather than data monetization. Pass stores passwords, passkeys, credit cards, and secure notes. The email alias feature (hide-my-email style) generates unique forwarding addresses per site, reducing spam exposure. The browser extension works across Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Brave. Mobile apps cover iOS and Android. Pricing is free for unlimited passwords on one device, then $1.99/month (Pass Plus) for multi-device sync, integrated email aliases, and 2FA integration. Proton Pass is included in the Proton Unlimited bundle ($9.99/month) covering ProtonMail, ProtonVPN, Proton Drive, and Pass. Reddit privacy communities switched from 1Password or Bitwarden to Proton Pass primarily to consolidate into the Proton ecosystem. The criticism is that it is newer and less polished than 1Password — import tools are limited and some browser extensions have had reliability issues.

Who Is This For?

Hands-on tested May 2026

Signup Experience

Requires a Proton account -- sign up via ProtonMail if you do not have one. Browser extension and mobile apps install quickly. Import from other password managers works for most common formats. Free tier includes unlimited passwords, notes, and credit cards across all devices.

For Home Users

Free tier is generous with no device or password limits. Integration with the Proton ecosystem is a bonus if you already use ProtonMail or Proton VPN. Less mature than Bitwarden or 1Password but improving rapidly. Good choice for privacy-conscious users already in the Proton ecosystem.

For Business Users

Plus at $1.99/mo adds hide-my-email aliases and integrated 2FA authenticator. Business at $3.99/user/mo includes admin console, user provisioning, and audit logs. More affordable than 1Password for teams. Bitwarden remains the stronger enterprise pick for its audit history and breadth of integrations, but Proton Pass is catching up with a compelling privacy story.

Our Verdict

Proton Pass is the strongest privacy-first password manager available today, especially compelling at $1.99/month standalone or as part of the $9.99/month Proton bundle. The email alias integration is a genuinely useful feature that standalone password managers don't offer. It is newer and less mature than 1Password or Bitwarden in edge-case reliability — if you are not in the Proton ecosystem already, Bitwarden is the safer all-round choice.
